Precaution is better than cure...

Dear Friends,

Here is important info about one of the diseases which can be easily avoided….with care.

A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney.
What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones are made of salts and minerals in the urine that stick together, creating small "pebbles" formed within the kidney or urinary tract. They can be as small as grains of sand or as large as golf balls. Kidney stones are a common cause of blood in the urine and often severe pain in the abdomen, flank, or groin. One in every 20 people develops a kidney stone at some point in their life.
The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough water.
What causes kidney stones?
Kidney stones form when a change occurs in the normal balance of water, salts, minerals, and other substances found in urine. Other chemical compounds that can form stones in the urinary tract include uric acid and the amino acid cystine. Dehydration through reduced fluid intake and strenuous exercise without adequate fluid replacement increase the risk of kidney stones. Some people are more likely to get kidney stones because of a medical condition or family history, as the tendency to form kidney stones may also be inherited. If other people in your family have had them, you may have them too.
The number of people in the United States with kidney stones has been increasing over the past 30 years.
Who is likely to develop a kidney stone?
For unknown reasons, the number of people in the United States with kidney stones has been increasing over the past 30 years. The prevalence of stone-forming disease rose from 3.8% in the late 1970s to 5.2% in the late 1980s and early 1990s. White Americans are more prone to develop kidney stones than African Americans, and they occur more frequently in men. The prevalence of kidney stones rises dramatically as men enter their 40s, and it continues to rise into their 70s. For women, the prevalence of kidney stones peaks in their 50s. Once a person gets more than one stone, others are more likely to develop.
Symptoms and signs of a kidney stone include excruciating, cramping pain in the lower back and/or side, groin, or abdomen as well as blood in the urine.
What are symptoms of kidney stones?
Kidney stones often cause no pain while they are in the kidneys, but they can cause sudden, severe pain as they travel from the kidneys to the bladder. Symptoms and signs include excruciating, cramping pain in the lower back and/or side, groin, or abdomen as well as blood in the urine. If infection is present in the urinary tract along with the stones, there may be fever and chills. A doctor should be called immediately.
A helical CT scan without contrast material is the most common test to detect stones or obstruction within the urinary tract.
How are kidney stones diagnosed?
The diagnosis of kidney stones is suspected by the typical pattern of symptoms when other possible causes of the abdominal or flank pain are excluded. Imaging tests are usually done to confirm the diagnosis. A helical CT scan without contrast material is the most common test to detect stones or obstruction within the urinary tract. In pregnant women or those who should avoid radiation exposure, an ultrasound examination may be done to help establish the diagnosis.

Depending on the size, most stones eventually pass on their own within 48 hours.
What is the treatment for kidney stones?
Most kidney stones eventually pass through the urinary tract on their own within 48 hours, with ample fluid intake. Pain medications can be prescribed for symptom relief. There are several factors which influence the ability to pass a stone. These include the size of the person, prior stone passage, prostate enlargement, pregnancy, and the size of the stone. A 4 mm stone has an 80% chance of passage, while a 5 mm stone has a 20% chance. Stones larger than 9-10 mm rarely pass on their own and usually require treatment.
For kidney stones that do not pass on their own, a shock wave procedure called lithotripsy is often used to break up a large stone into smaller pieces to pass.
What is the treatment for stones that do not pass on their own?
For kidney stones that do not pass on their own, a procedure called lithotripsy is often used. In this procedure, shock waves are used to break up a large stone into smaller pieces that can then pass through the urinary system. Surgical techniques have also been developed to remove kidney stones. This may be done through a small incision in the skin (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) or through an instrument known as a ureteroscope that is passed through the urethra and bladder up into the ureter.
To help prevent kidney stones, drink enough water to keep your urine clear.
How can kidney stones be prevented?
The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough water. Try to drink enough water to keep your urine clear (about eight to 10 glasses of water a day). Drinking grapefruit juice may increase your risk for developing kidney stones
Dietary choices can affect kidney stone development.
What are risk factors you can control?
If you think that your diet may be a problem, schedule an appointment with a dietitian and review your food choices. Vitamins C and D can increase your risk of kidney stones when you take more than the daily recommendations. Levels of calcium in the diet may also affect your risk of kidney stones. Getting the recommended amounts of calcium combined with a low-sodium, low-protein diet may decrease your risk of kidney stones. Diets high in protein, sodium, and oxalate-rich foods, such as dark green vegetables, also increase your risk for developing kidney stones.
Weight gain can increase the risk of kidney stones.
Learn about additional risk factors you can control.
Weight gain can result in both insulin resistance and increased calcium in the urine, which can result in a greater risk for kidney stones. In one study, weight gain since early adulthood, a high body mass index (BMI), and a large waist size increased a person's risk for kidney stones. People who are not very active may also have problems with kidney stones. Additionally, some medicines, such as acetazolamide (Diamox) or indinavir (Crixivan), can cause kidney stones to form.

Patience and Gratitude...the Learnings from Ramzan.

Dear Friends,

As Ramzan festivities are around ,the  whole day fasting is a peculiar aspect of this Holy Month. The concept of fasting is also practiced by people of other religion also ,there are many ways of looking at this very concept ,physically ,spiritually or so. In the context of Ramzan it is about developing the power and intensity of  patience which is crucial  while facing the obstacles and unusual incidents in life, especially during the testing times this element of Patience matters most ,it reflects an individual’s inner toughness and the amount of control one has upon himself or herself. While facing the tough situations in life the quality of patience helps us on both the  fronts to make a smooth drive.

Ramzan nights are about expressing Gratitude to the Almighty for all his blessings and goodness towards enjoying the birth as a Human Being. One is expected to express all his gratitude for the Almighty during night. Thus Patience(Sabra) and Gratitude(Shukra) are two crucial messages ,life  principles to be derived ,practiced ,internalized for a happy and smooth life altogether. When we look at the religious practices there is a thoughtful  approach…towards making the journey called life smooth as much possible.

Leading a revolution for a nobel cause....

Dear Friends,
These are facts about the man who is leading a revolution….

10 things to know about Anna Hazare 'n Jan Lok Pal Bill.. !

1. Who is Anna Hazare?

An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2. What's so special about him?

He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

3. So what?

This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,...?

This man , Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?

He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.

6. How that can be possible?

He is advocating for a Bil, The Jan Lokpal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It's an entirely new thing right..?

In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit thier theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?

The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the JAN LOKPAL BILL. 50% government participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?

A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.

9. Is he alone? Who else is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?

Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.

Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

10. Ok, got it. What can I do?

At least we can spread the message. How?

At least we can support Anna Hazare and the cause for uprooting corruption from India.

At least we can hope that his Hunger Strike does not go in vain.

At least we can pray for his good health.

A Business Stalwart with a difference

Dear Friends,

Many of you must be aware that Infosys Chairman N.R.Narayan Murthy ( Nagavara Ramarao Narayan Murthy) retired from Infosys this Saturday. An organization which started from 300$ in 1981 is more than 300$ billion today , he is a  true leader who once said he is Capitalist by  Mind but Socialist by Heart and we can see these reflections in the complete making of Infosys .

He says Infosys is the only company in the globe with a Mission statement ,”We wanted to be globally respected Company” when asked why he wanted to make it so ,he said ,”when we are small  our parents insists on don’t do this ,do this kind of treatment ,when we bring home even a rubber or a pen of our classmate we get instructions not to repeat such acts in future thus value system is our DNA”, hence he wanted to make it the part of his business mission as well.

Inner beauty transforming the outerworld...

Dear Friends,

When we look at the lives and work of Baba Amte ,Mother Teresa and others alike what we find is they have seen beauty where there was complete darkness ,where people were not able to think beyond ,they have seen the situation absolutely in a different manner and finally they have created a beautiful world and left a legacy for us to cherish and follow. When a sculptor chisels the stone he stops when he creates the impression of his minds in the stone and it gives rise to wonderful creations so is the case with minds which are beautiful ,positive, constructive ,optimist they make a whole lot of difference in and around…alas!!!! We were all such entities…this planet would have been heaven indeed.
At least we can contribute our bit to make it inch by inch….. It is said we look at the outerworld by wearing the specatcles of the innerworld hence our inner world is very much responsible for what we do in the outerworld..very precisely inner beauty translates into outerworld.
You have a great time ahead.
Thank you.

Begining a new version of life....

Dear Friends,
A girl married  a boy . At the end of the wedding  party, her  mother gave her a newly opened bank saving passbook With  Rs.1000 deposit amount.   Mother said to her , take this passbook. Keep it as a record of  your marriage life. When there's something happy and memorable happened  in your new life, put some money in. Write down what it's about next to  the line. The more memorable the event is, the more money you can put in.  I've done the first one for you today. Do the others with your husband.  When  you look back after years, you can know how much happiness you've had.'  She had shared this with her husband when getting home. They both  thought it was a great idea and were anxious to know when the second deposit can be made. This was what they did after certain time:

  - 7 Feb: Rs.100, first birthday celebration
of the  HUSBAND  after marriage

  - 1 Mar: Rs.300, salary raise for
the Girl.

  - 20 Mar: Rs.200, vacation trip to Bali

  - 15 Apr: Rs.2000,
the girl  got pregnant

  - 1 Jun: Rs.1000, H
usband got promoted

  .... and so on...
However, after years, they started fighting and arguing for  trivial things. They didn't talk much. They regretted that they had  married the most nasty people in the world.... no more love... One day
she  talked to her Mother: 'Mom, we can't stand it anymore.   We agree to divorce.   I can't imagine how I decided to marry this guy!!!'
Mother: 'Sure, girl, that's no big deal. Just do whatever  you want if you really can't stand it. But before that, do one thing first.  Remember the saving passbook I gave you on your wedding day? Take out  all money and spend it first. You shouldn't keep any record of such a  poor marriage.'

She  thought it was true. So she went to the bank, waiting  at the queue and planning to cancel the account. While she was waiting,  she took a look at the passbook record. She looked, and looked, and looked.  Then the memory of all the previous joy and happiness just came up  her mind. Her eyes were then filled with tears. She left and went home.
When she was home, she handed the passbook to
her husband, asked him to spend  the money before getting divorce.
The next day, her husband gave the passbook back to her. She found a new deposit of Rs.5000. And a line next to the
record:  'This is the day I notice how much I've loved you thru out  all these years. How much happiness you've brought me.'  They hugged and cried, putting the passbook back to the  safe.  "Life is about correcting mistakes."
Wish you a meaningful day ahead.
Thank you.

Excellence is Insurance...

Dear Friends,

A senior IPS Officer was addressing the gathering about excellence in life he narrated his experience saying when he worked with one of the Investigation agencies ,he went to a state for conducting an enquiry about  certain flaws . While he arrived at the Air Port he could find an Ambassador  Driver waiting to assist him for further journey. The officer said he found the car as if it was bought the other day ,so out of curiosity he asked the driver whether it was recently bought or so. The driver said sir it was bought 10 years ago and the officer was surprised beyond limits ,he could not believe it moreover when the driver told the secret ,the officer found himself low before the driver.

The driver said,’’ officer’s come and go but the car remains with me and this is the only thing which brings bread and butter for my family so what’s bad in worshiping it ,I worship God and then this car hence I have kept it in this state hence it looks like as if it was purchased recently”. Having heard his explanation the officer was speechless. The Officer said this was the classic example of Devotion to Duty…when this happens it obviously creates Excellence which happens to be our insurance for survival.

Getting internally sorted to outperform....

Dear Friends ,

Opportunities and adversities never come with an invitation ,life is altogether a game of unpredictable situations, adversities test the actual strength in many dimensions…being alert with an open mind to face the next is the mantra which can safeguard and drive through tough situations…active mind and body is less prone to such adverse situations infact it helps to spot opportunities towards getting the best of it…many things surround us back of the mind but as is said when we are internally sorted we can effectively increase our outer efficiency….towards which, immediate resolution of such bugs becomes necessary ,living in the present, being  active to make efforts and attack the next is a necessity infact that gives tremendous energy to march ahead …hence getting sorted internally becomes necessary.
Those who take head on with extreme situations are the one’s who can do it because of the same…they play life’s sport such is the importance of getting internally sorted .

Wish you a great day ahead.
Thank you.
